OD&D - Session Prep
I've had the urge to go back to the game that started it all, 1974s Dungeons & Dragons…
The Original game, in my opinion, is a superb game. Some people think that the Rules are all over the place, but I disagree. At it's core, it's a very simple game.
It's further simplified with the use of Man-to-Man Combat from Chainmail.
So, I had the urge to create Two Adventuring Parties. Really simple, 3d6 down the line, if a stat hit's a prime requisite for the Class, then that's what they'll be. I put my parties on a Record Sheet…
I still need to write the Saving Throws down for the Characters. But, that shouldn't take too long.
As I was prepping though, I wanted to include Outdoor Survival (which is mentioned in Men & Magic, pg. 5 and The Underworld & Wilderness Adventures, pg. 15).
How can you incorporate the old Avalon Hill Board Game for an OD&D Campaign?
Luckily, Daniel of Bandits Keep has been playing a Solo Game of OD&D with Outdoor Survival for a while now.
One thing that piqued my interest was the Mapper mini-game, where a lone Mapper explores the Wilderness to collect Points Of Interests to sell to Patrons and Adventurers.
I watched the videos and I came up with my own system to use, based off of Daniels Mapper mini-game.
I wrote down quickly what I could grok from the videos and adding funky dice numbers (d14 and d17!?) into the mix. The map I'll be using is from Irdulana Archives called Outdoor Survival Remix. It has two different maps and changes the Deer and Hut icons to Castles and Towns.
I'm looking forward to getting started with this Campaign. It'll be less narrative in these lower level plays. But, that might change as they get more powerful!
Keep on gaming!

Looking forward to this!!
This is good timing, I’ve been hoping to learn how to play OD&D for a while! Looking forward to reading your reports Cuppa!
